AIRFARE GOOFS: With hundreds of thousands of new fares coming into the airline systems each day, mistakes are bound to happen. Sometimes it is as simple as dropping the last digit off a fare (as when American posted a First Class roundtrip fare between Southern California (Orange County) and Cincinnati for $200 instead of $2,000). Sometimes its a low fare meant for night flights -- but allowing it for daytime travel as well. United's latest goof was on Jan 31 with roundtrip fares to Paris, Hong Kong, etc for under $30. Two years ago United posted $0 (that's zero) fares between Denver and New York, Washington, Chicago, Atlanta Baltimore and Dallas, etc. After adding assorted taxes and fees you could have traveled round trip for about $16 -- if you had exploited it early. The mistake was withdrawn within 6 hours. |

SHORT-TERM FARE CUTS: Airlines closely monitor each other's fares and are quick to react anytime another airline introduces a low fare to poach on its "cash cow" routes. The usual technique is to plop a low fare into the middle of a "cash cow" route of the offending airline. Delta and United slugged it out on the Honolulu routes out of Atlanta, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit, Miami, Minneapolis and St Louis the last of February with fares as low as $310 round trip. Sometimes it is an introductory fare, or a fare intended to "test" a particular market. In some cases we have seen limited-time fares (e.g. East Coast fares around $212 roundtrip to Hawaii for Pearl Harbor Day or fares around Mardi Gras, the Boston Marathon, etc.). And, frankly, there are fare cuts lasting just a few hours for which there are no stated reasons. |
